”In a textbook example of why feminism isn’t just a women’s issue”
What a weird take on it. More like ”in a textbook example of males reacting violently and threateningly to put a woman back in her place.”

"Mother Gothel’s design makes me uncomfortable. Her dark, thick, curly hair, her sharp nose, and the way her features are generally perceived as more "ethnic" in comparison to all the other human characters in Tangled—it all reminds me of an archetype for Jewish women"

Interesting fact: The stereotypical witch found in fairy tales was usually portrayed as the stereotypical Jew in order to spread anti Semitic propaganda.
This is also where we get the “greedy Jew” stereotype, as goblins, hobgoblins, gnomes and dwarves were also portrayed as the harmful Jewish archetype.
In the middle ages, it was a sin for a Christian to hoard or handle large amounts of money, which left the profitable banking industry open to Jews. It’s ridiculous that Christians created the stereotype to avoid a sin, and this stereotype is still portrayed and spread today

I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR MONTHS especially since if mother gothel looks like a nazi propaganda-esque jewish woman, and she steals the most aryan-looking baby in the kingdom to use its essence in a ceremony…like does that smell like blood libel or am i paranoid

RELEVANT

Fucking spot on. Mother Gothel, Jafar, Scar, Captain Hook, the witch in Snow White…look at the facial features they have in common. Then look at the Jewish Ashkenazi ethnotype. Yep. Really.

This is why it’s so important to me that we have actresses like Lisa Edelstein (best known for her role as Dr. Lisa Cuddy, from House).

Compare this picture here to the picture of Gothel. Look at their hair, nose, eyes, even the prominent collarbones (not that that’s a Jewish thing, but it’s a similarity).
The best difference is that Lisa is real. She’s a strong woman who has not hidden her Jewish ethnicity. She might straighten her hair from time to time, but she hasn’t gotten a nose job (as so many in her position would) and she hasn’t denounced her heritage.
The Ashkenazi body is gorgeous (so are many other Jewish bodies; all of them, in fact). We should reclaim it. I want to see more positive expressions of this ethnotype, I want more “good” characters with these body types.

This is exactly why my character Rivka, and her nose, mean so much to me. I wanted her to be heroic, kind, brave, loving, and stand for goodness. I wanted her to be everything Gothel is not. WITH my nose.

(I know she doesn’t have dark hair, but I was basically imagining a Captain America serum-ized version of myself.) But, basically, yeah. Those coded features, demonstrating heroism and nurturing. Fiercely positive and fiercely Jewish.

Also may I just add that in the introduction sequence of Tangled, they literally say “Although she easily could’ve shared the golden flower with the kingdom she kept it for herself” Rich Jews keeping their money out of greed instead of helping the country going through financial crisis was a trope often used by Nazi propaganda.

UGGGH This is a good addition to the post and wow, I’d forgotten that detail because I only watched it once (and was distracted by Rapunzel’s dad being hot.)

We know why.

Don’t forget Charlie Sheen. He’s been arrested for domestic violence at least six times and shot a woman. With a gun. And he’s still got a career.

Sean Penn tied Madonna to a chair and beat her. Fuck him. Fuck all of them.

Michael Fassbender
Matthew Fox
John Lennon
Paul McCartney
Ringo too I’m pretty sure
Phil Spector, although he’s now in jail for killing a lady he beat on Ronnie Spector for years and still got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Axl Rose
Vince Neil
Sean Penn
Charlie Sheen
Jim Morrison tried to set fire to his girlfriend
Stephen Segal
Tommy Lee
Ozzy Osbourne
Mickey Rourke
Bill Murray
Gary Busey
Tom Sizemore
Christian Slater
James Caan
Josh Brolin
Edward Furlong
I could go on.
The point isn’t that the men on the left don’t deserve everything bad they have coming to them.  The point is where the fuck is all the outrage when the men on the right do it.  So many of our pop culture heroes are abusers and nobody seems to care.
Like, even if we’re gonna stick to the NFL, Ben Roethlisberger patiently sat out his six game suspension for rape and continued on with his career with little outrage.
If we’re really going to care now about ostracizing perpetrators of domestic violence, we got a lotta slack to pick up.
